What is Sydney Airport like?
Sydney International Airport, officially called Kingsford Smith, is one of the largest and busiest in Australia. For exchange students in the program Study and Work in Australia, this will be the gateway to an experience that will transform your life!
The airport has three well-structured terminals: T1 for international flights and T2 and T3 for domestic flights. The international terminal impresses with its modern architecture and large spaces, offering a perfect introduction to the Australian lifestyle. Here you can find everything you need to recover after that long international flight - and trust me, we know what that's like!
Practical information and airport data
Before embarking on your Australian adventure, take note of these essential information that will facilitate your arrival:

Available facilities and services
When you arrive at Sydney Airport, you will have access to a range of amenities that will make you feel at home right from the start:
- Free Wi-Fi at every terminal, so you can send that message “I've arrived!” For the family
- Currency exchange with several exchange office options to exchange your reais for Australian dollars

How to leave the airport and get to the center
Transportation from Sydney Airport to your final destination is super smooth, with options to suit every style and budget. The Australian public transport system is efficient and widely used by locals - an excellent choice for exchange students who want to save money from day one!
The fastest option is the Airport Link, a train service that connects the airport to Sydney Central Station in just 13 minutes. Trains depart every 10 minutes and the station is located between the domestic terminals T2 and T3. In the international terminal T1, the station is on the lower level. This is the option that we most recommend for our exchange students, combining practicality and good cost-benefit.
Between the terminals, you can also use the T-Bus bus service that connects the international terminal T1 to the terminals T2/T3. The journey takes about 10 minutes and the service runs from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. It's a helping hand for those who need to make connections between international and domestic flights!
Transportation options and their approximate costs
Knowing the transportation alternatives and their costs is essential for those arriving in Australia. With a little planning, you can start your savings journey now! Here are the main options:
- Airport Link Train: The most efficient option, costing approximately AUD 15-20 for the center. Time: 13 minutes.
- Bus: The Sydney Buses line 400 travels between Bondi Junction and Burwood, passing through the terminals. Approximate cost: AUD 5-8. Time: 45-60 minutes.
- taxi: Convenient but more expensive, costing between AUD 45-60 to the center. Time: 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
- Rideshare services (Uber, Ola): Modern and generally cheaper alternative to taxis, with prices ranging from AUD 35-50.
- Shared shuttle: Pre-booked economic option, costing approximately AUD 20-25.
Remember that many bus companies offer transportation between the airport and most of the Sydney suburbs, but these services must be booked in advance. At Be Easy, we help our students with all these reservations before they even travel!
Tips for saving on arrival
For those arriving in Australia for the first time, saving money in the early days is essential so as not to start the exchange “in the red”! A golden tip is to buy an Opal card, the rechargeable card used for public transport in Sydney. It can be purchased at the airport itself and allows for cheaper travel around the city.
Avoid exchanging large amounts of money at the airport, where rates are often less favorable. Change only what is necessary for the first few days and look for exchange offices in the city center for the rest. Another alternative is to use international cards at local ATMs, which generally offer more advantageous rates. Your Be Easy coordinators always share the best tips on where to exchange money with the lowest fees!
What to do in case of delays or long waits
If you have to wait long hours at the airport, either because of connections or that inevitable delay, don't worry! Sydney Airport offers several options to make your wait more pleasant and productive:
- Explore the various stores in the terminals, which include Australian and international brands (great chance to get to know the local brands!)
- Visit Duty Free for gifts and souvenirs at tax-free prices
- Relax in one of the available lounges (some accept separate payment)
- Try the local cuisine at the various restaurants and cafés (you're getting used to the Australian accent while ordering your coffee!)
- Use workspaces with power outlets to charge your devices
- Take advantage of aircraft observation areas, popular with aviation enthusiasts
Essential preparations before leaving the airport
Before leaving the airport, be sure to make some essential preparations that will make your first days in Australia easier:
- Get a local chip for your cell phone (operators such as Telstra, Optus and Vodafone have kiosks in the terminal)
- Check the exact location of your accommodation and the best route to get there
- Confirm the operating hours of the means of transport, especially if you arrive late at night
- Exchange a small amount of money for your initial expenses
- Save the address of your accommodation in physical format in case your cell phone runs out of battery
- Inquire about the current weather in Sydney to prepare accordingly
Reception of exchange students at the airport
One of the most awaited moments for our exchange students is their arrival in Sydney! In partnership with schools and accommodations, Be Easy offers airport reception options to make your arrival even smoother. Many students choose transfer services, especially when arriving for the first time or after long flights.
If you hired the transfer service, look for a person holding a sign with your name in the international arrivals area. In case of delays or problems with luggage, you will receive all instructions on how to proceed and emergency contacts before the trip. At Be Easy, we guarantee that you will never be alone, even thousands of kilometers from home!
