These steps are mandatory for all international students and must be taken within the first few days after their arrival. The Wohnungsgeberbestätigung document is particularly important and must be obtained from your landlord before coming to the registry office. This is an official form where the landlord confirms that you are actually living at the address indicated. Without this document, your registration will probably not be accepted.

Residence permit for international students

After obtaining your municipal registration confirmation, the next step depends on your country of origin. Students from European Union countries, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland have the process simplified, while others will need to apply for a formal residence permit.

For EU/EEA/Switzerland students:

  • It is not necessary to obtain a formal residence permit
  • Generally, it is only necessary to present proof of health insurance and sufficient financial resources.
  • The Resident Registration Office will provide a confirmation of your right of residence.

For students from other countries:

  • It is mandatory to apply for a residence permit at the Foreign Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde)
  • The request must be made within the first three months after arrival
  • The permit is issued as an “electronic residence document” (Elektronischer Aufenthaltstitel) - a chip card that contains your data and fingerprints
  • The initial fee can reach €110, and the extension costs up to €100
  • The document is ready for withdrawal after four to six weeks
  • The initial permit is valid for one to two years and can be renewed upon proof of regular academic progress

The documents generally required for a residence permit include:

  4. Proof of health insurance: Must be recognized in Germany
  5. Proof of financial resources: Demonstrating the ability to support themselves during studies (approximately €992 per month)

  7. Completed request form: Available in the office or online
  8. Processing fee: Up to €110 for the first request
