Gathering the right documents, in the correct formats and within the valid deadlines is what decides whether the student visa to Malta will be approved or refused. The process involves more than eight categories of documents and each one has specific criteria that, if ignored, compromise the entire request.

This article provides the complete checklist based on the requirements updated by Identità Malta for 2026, explaining not only what to present, but what each document must be in order to be accepted. If you're still in the early stages of planning, check out the guide on How to do an exchange in Malta for an overview before moving on to the documentation.

Why are student visas to Malta refused?

Most refusals are not due to a candidate's lack of eligibility. It happens due to flaws in the documentation: an overdue deadline, an unofficial translation, an inconsistent bank balance, or a document without letterhead.

Identità Malta did important visa criteria updates in 2025 and 2026. Any process built based on old guidelines may not meet current requirements. Therefore, using an updated checklist is the first concrete step to avoid refusal.

Attention: the request must be submitted at least 9 weeks before the course start date. The average processing time after scheduling is 8-10 weeks.

What documents are required for a student visa in Malta?

Next, each document category with the specifications that the consulate requires.

1. Request forms

Visa application form completely completed in English and signed by the candidate

GDPR Form also signed by the candidate

Both must be completed in English. Blank fields or missing signatures invalidate the process even before the other documents are analyzed.

2. Passport and photograph

Original passport valid for at least 10 months after the end of the desired stay

• At least 3 blank pages

Full copy of passport: front and back of the cover, all pages filled out and all pages blank

A recent passport photo: 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm, colored, white background

The copy of the passport must be in full. Partial copies (just the page with the photo, for example) are not accepted.

3. Official translation of documents

Any document that is not in English must be translated by an official translator. Until March 31, 2026, the translation can be done by a translator in the student's country of origin. After that date, only translators from the official Identità Malta list will be accepted.

Check the list of certified translators directly on the Identità Malta website before hiring any service.

4. Travel medical insurance

Insurance must meet all of the criteria below at the same time. The absence of any of them may lead to refusal:

Valid for study purposes (not just tourism)

• Coverage for all Schengen Zone countries

Minimum coverage of €30,000 In medical expenses

Continuous validity of at least 120 days, covering travel dates and the entire stay

• Translated into English

Insurances issued only for the destination Malta, without covering the Schengen area, are not accepted.

5. Confirmed travel itinerary

The itinerary must display the student's name, all dates, and stops. Some rules:

• The arrival flight can be up to 2 weeks before the start of the course

• The return flight must leave the Schengen Zone no later than 7 days after the end of the course

• For courses of 27 weeks or more (including holidays), a return flight is not required

It is possible to submit a flight reservation without a confirmed purchase. However, the document must contain the student's name and the exact dates.

6. Proof of accommodation

The document must indicate the student's name, full address, and length of stay. The minimum required is 14 nights from arrival in Malta. See what is accepted by type of housing:

Hotel or platform (Airbnb, Booking.com): booking confirmation with student details

Own rent: contract signed by both parties (landlord and tenant)

Host family (homestay): valid MTA license signed by the Malta Tourism Authorities and rental declaration form

Hosted by a Maltese resident: statement stamped and signed by a lawyer or notary, plus proof of residence of the host

The choice of accommodation also directly influences the amount of financial proof required. This calculation is detailed in the article on How to calculate financial proof for a Malta visa.

7. Financial proof

Identità Malta requires students to prove funds of at least 75% of the Maltese national minimum wage per month of study. The calculation is made based on the type of accommodation: €28 per day for rental or hotel, or €18 per day for homestay or school accommodation.

The required bank documents are:

Bank letter or certificate with available balance

• Bank statement for the last 3 months

Maximum issue date of 30 days before scheduling at the VFS

• Extract in euros or with conversion via XE.com

• Document must include the holder's identification number

For sponsorship (when the student does not have their own funds), a letter of financial responsibility from the sponsor, a bank statement from the last 3 months, and a copy of the sponsor's identity document are required.

8. International bank card

• Photo or copy of the international debit card (VISA or MasterCard), front and back

• The number and expiration date must be visible (CVV can be hidden)

• The card must be from the same bank that issued the bank statement

9. Invitation letter and school documents

The school issues the letter of invitation after approval of the documents and payment. It must contain:

• Student's full name

• Weekly course workload

• Program start and end date

• Data from the educational institution

The letter of invitation is not issued before the minimum payment required by the school. Consult the specific requirements for a student visa in Malta to understand how this step fits into the overall process.

What changes in the documents for students under 18?

For minors, the process requires an additional layer of documentation:

Original birth certificate: legalized and translated into English

Letter of consent signed by both parents: original, legalized and translated into English

• Copy of the passport or identity document of both parents

Financial proof of minors can be provided in full by the sponsor (usually the parents). The sponsor must present a bank statement from the last 3 months, a letter of financial responsibility detailing how the support will be provided and a copy of the identity document.

What does Identità Malta analyze before making the decision?

In addition to the documents themselves, Identità Malta assesses the coherence of the set. Some situations that raise doubts:

• High and recent bank deposits (“new money”) close to the statement issue date

• Documents without letterhead or without complete bank information

• Insurance that does not cover the minimum 120 consecutive days or that does not include all Schengen countries

• Accommodation without the student's name or with a duration of less than 14 nights

• Documents that are out of the 30-day validity period

If the visa is denied, even if the documentation was complete, understand what to do by consulting the article on What happens if a student visa is denied.

And it accepts a ticket reservation, as long as it contains the student's name and dates. Confirmed purchase is not mandatory for most courses, except in specific cases indicated by the school.
