The year 2025 brings significant changes for international students planning to live in Ireland. As of January 13, the residence permit registration process will be centralized in Dublin, affecting students from all Irish counties. If you are planning study and work in Ireland, it is essential to understand these changes to ensure a smooth transition.

Key changes to the registration process

O Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) the Irish Department of Justice implemented an important centralization of the registration process. Now, all international students from countries outside the European Union, European Economic Area, United Kingdom or Switzerland, who intend to remain in the country for more than 90 days, must complete their initial registration exclusively at the Registration Office, located in Burgh Quay, Dublin 2.

This change aims to simplify and standardize the registration process, eliminating the need to attend Garda police stations in different counties. Centralization promises to make the procedure more efficient and consistent for all international students.

How does the new scheduling system work

The new process requires students to use the Digital Contact Center platform to schedule their registration. It is necessary to create an individual account, as each appointment is linked to the requester's unique profile. This digital system allows better management of schedules and reduces waiting time.

The platform was developed to be intuitive and easy to navigate, allowing students to choose the most convenient time for their registration. It is important to note that scheduling should only be made upon arrival in Ireland, as the confirmation will be sent to the student's local mobile number.

Documentation required for registration

The success of your registration depends on the correct presentation of all necessary documents. During your appointment at the Registration Office, you will need to present:

  • Valid passport or equivalent document recognized by the Irish government
  • Printed and completed address form (sent by email after booking confirmation)
  • Supporting documentation specific to your permit type (all copies must be printed)
  • Proof of payment of the registration fee of €300 for adults
  • Documents that prove your study abroad program

Payment process and specifics

The new registration system also brought important changes to the payment process. To ensure a smooth procedure, pay attention to the following points:

  1. The payment of the €300 fee must be made exclusively with a debit or credit card
  2. Payments in cash or by approach (contactless) are not accepted
  3. Registration will not be completed without payment of the fee at the time of service
  4. The issuance of the IRP (Irish Residence Permit) card is subject to payment
  5. Each adult must pay their individual registration fee

Transition periods and renewals

During the transition period until January 31, 2025, some students will still be able to keep their schedules at Garda police stations as long as they are outside the counties of Cork, Dublin, Kildare, Limerick, Meath, and Wicklow. However, there is the option to cancel these appointments and register directly in Dublin.

For those who already hold a residence permit, renewals will continue to be processed exclusively online through the ISD renewal portal. This digital process makes it easy to renew the permit without having to attend in person.

Practical recommendations for registration

Proper preparation is critical to ensure a successful registration process. Considering the implemented changes, we strongly recommend that students:

  1. Wait for your arrival in Ireland to make an appointment
  2. Purchase an Irish phone number before starting the process
  3. Organize all necessary documentation in advance
  4. Make extra copies of all important documents
  5. Arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes in advance
  6. Check the validity of payment cards before registration

Important deadlines and considerations

Meeting the deadlines is crucial in the Irish residence registration process. International students must register within the first 90 days after arriving in the country. Failure to meet this deadline may result in complications with your residence status and possible penalties.

It should be noted that the IRP card will be sent to the address provided at the time of registration. So make sure you provide a valid, permanent address during your stay in Ireland. Any change of address must be immediately reported to the authorities through the ISD's online portal.

Additional support and assistance

Students who need additional support during the process can count on several service channels. The ISD maintains a dedicated support line to answer questions about registration, in addition to an online portal with detailed and regularly updated information.
